I feel your loss most keenly in those moments between sleeping and waking, when dreams have not quite given way to my new, bleak reality and my mind tricks me into thinking that you are still by my side.
I don’t remember much about that morning, because I was only six years old. I do remember that the lady policewoman gave me a lollipop, an orange flavoured one, to distract me from the fact that mother couldn’t stop crying.
I could not bring myself to write the actual prompt in the title, and ‘bullying’ still aptly describes the theme of the first half of the piece below, which I automatically wrote thinking of young-girls-who-have-just-crossed-into-adolescence as the audience – just to bear in mind when reading 🙂

Away over the glittering blue
Her gaze sweeps unseen.
Tears trace salty tracks
Even as the brine-infused breeze
Dries them before journey’s end.
She sighs, saddened, wishes for
The surity of his calloused hands
But they are frozen deep
Within that glittering blue.
